Walking into a restaurant with a cuisine you have never tried can feel like a big step. When you do not know the dishes, you do not know what to order or what to expect at the table.
This is the story of our restaurant video work with Mr Khinkali. We are a team of four based in Kordelio, Thessaloniki, and we help them share their kitchen with the city through simple, clear videos.
A menu many locals have not tried
Mr Khinkali is one of the few Georgian restaurants in Thessaloniki. Because Georgian dishes are new to many local diners, a photo alone often cannot explain what makes the menu special.
A still picture can look nice, but it leaves questions open. If someone has never seen khinkali, a photo does not show what is inside, how big it is, or how to hold and eat it.
To help people feel comfortable trying something new, you have to take away the mystery. That is where short video comes in.
Show, do not tell
For Mr Khinkali we follow one simple rule: show, do not tell. We make Instagram and TikTok videos that focus on the real food and how it comes together.
Antonis films at the restaurant, showing how khinkali is made, served and eaten, along with the rest of the Georgian menu. Each shoot focuses on the details of the kitchen and the dishes, so the viewer understands at once what they are looking at.
By getting close to the preparation and the plate, we let the food speak for itself. As the team at the restaurant puts it: “We’re one of the few Georgian restaurants in Thessaloniki. Cultivate helps us explain that to people with videos that actually show what khinkali is.”
How a shoot day works
Running a kitchen takes focus, and a camera should never get in the way of the real work. We keep our process small and calm, so the staff can do their jobs.
We usually do one organised shoot a month. Anna arranges the shoot days so filming fits around the restaurant and its normal hours. On the day, Antonis directs the shots and films the kitchen at work, and afterwards he edits the footage for Reels and TikTok. You can read more about our social media video service.
What any restaurant with a new cuisine can learn
For restaurants and cafés with a distinct cuisine, short video is the simplest way to let people see the textures and portions before they walk in. If you serve food that is new to your area, here are four things to take from our work with Mr Khinkali:
- Lead with the process: show the hands in the kitchen making the food.
- Show the portion and texture up close: so people know what they are getting.
- One dish per video: trying to show the whole menu at once only confuses a viewer who is already learning something new.
- Keep it real: honest clips of how a dish is served and eaten do more than fancy effects.
Frequently asked questions
Why is video better than photos for an unusual menu?
When a cuisine is new to local diners, a still photo often cannot explain what makes the food special. Short video is the simplest way to show how a dish is made, served and eaten. People see the real textures and portions before they walk in, which makes ordering easier.
How often do you film at the restaurant?
Usually one organised shoot a month. That single session gives enough material for the month’s videos, without being in the kitchen every week. Anna arranges the shoot days so filming fits around the restaurant’s normal preparation.
Who does the filming and editing?
We are a small team of four. Anna organises the schedule with the restaurant. Antonis comes to direct and film the dishes and the kitchen details, and afterwards he edits all the footage for Instagram Reels and TikTok.
